The Power Of High Search Engine Rankings

  • Do not underestimate the power of a top listing on Google or Yahoo. If you plan on staying in business for a long time, the question should not be "Do I spend my time getting high results?" but rather "How many number one placements am I going to get?" Most people are looking for the easy way out, which is why they focus on pay per click. I'm not saying this is a bad strategy, as pay per click can be very lucrative if you know what you are doing.

The problem is that most people jump in head first and have no idea what they are doing, and then end up losing ALL of their money. If you are doing well with pay per click or any other form of advertising for that matter then obviously don't stop what you are doing. Just start adding to it. If you don't start applying these techniques you are leaving a lot of money on the table and I have never heard anyone say they are making enough money!

If you have not found any other marketing techniques that work for you then I would recommend starting with the techniques in this report, especially if you have a low budget. Even if you have a lot of money to advertise I would still recommend putting a good amount of your advertising budget into hiring a team of people to do this on your behalf.

The guys from Stompernet put together a great video from which I learned a lot about how powerful high organic listings really were. In fact that video is what really inspired me to write this report and raise awareness about this huge change that is taking place on the internet.

The Stompernet faculty did a study on a group of people where they used really expensive, fancy eye tracking equipment and some other crazy stuff to track where people were looking and clicking when they did a search on Google. In the video they used a heat map to show you the results. It was more than eye opening. For me it was a complete paradigm shift in the entire way I was thinking and marketing.

The amount of people who are drawn to and are more likely to click on the organic listings rather than the paid listings is amazing. I guess when you think about it, it makes sense. When people are using a search engine most of the time they are doing research on something. They are looking for information. We know either consciously or sub-consciously that the sponsored links are going to be advertisements and not really the information that we were searching for.

So why waste our time with them? Think about it-how often do you go searching for an advertisement? I can't think of a single time when I actually went out looking for an ad unless it was a funny commercial I was showing someone or something like that.

I always knew the obvious, that these methods are free and can bring a lot of traffic. I had no idea, however, how much quality traffic they truly had the potential to bring or how much they would help increase your bottom line. The best part is all the traffic that comes directly from the web 2.0 sites is pre sold. They already want to buy your product before you even offer it to them because of the very content that drove them to your site in the first place.

Google has been around for awhile and is trusted by most people to provide them with the most relevant and valuable information based on their search. So when you have a top 10 listing on Google, it's like Google, one of the most trusted names on the Internet, is vouching for you and your site. That's MASSIVE!!!

Not only that but the demographics but the quality of people that are more likely to click on an organic listing vs. a paid link are pretty amazing. High school kids are much more likely to click on the sponsored ads at the top than anything else. So unless that is your target market that's probably not where you want your ad.

    My Friend,

I can really relate to what you are saying. How many times do you really go out and look for ads when your searching for something. PPC Marketing can be very lucrative as you already said, but what also strikes me is that some people are just not fully aware of how strong real organic listings can be.

Great post and as for the boost in awareness, I think people should stop and think it over for a moment when there finished reading your post.

  • Yannick, You are one of our Gurus, so thank you. We are enjoying as we learn social networking, and now we have to challenge to master SEO. What you say makes great sense. For years we have been aware that in traditional advertising, whether it be newspaper, magazine, radio, TV, on they internet, most people who are “exposed” to our ad are note looking for it and they are not necessarily interested. Thanks for this thought provoking blog.

  • Yannick,
You’re absolutely correct! I do look at the generic listings first, hardly pay attention to the paid ads. You make a great point there!

  • The stompernet guys have been on the SEO scene since the old school online marketing days. Lately they’ve made a major push to refresh their own knowledge and seem to be returning with a bang! Anything that comes out with there name on it sells on reputation alone, because we know its gonna be gold.

That heatmap really emphasizes the “above the fold” principles of marketing/advertising. Too many sites now have huge headers that take up majority of that space without contributing to visual recognition. I like how your new theme has this real clean feel, lotta white space, and a strong branding image.

I think that heatmap is a good answer to why Katie Freilings theme (which has been modified) with the video and optin in the upper left section of the homepage, yields strong enough results that she has given up that kind of screen realestate. This certainly gives me some ideas for what I may eventually do with my own theme.

    Thanks!

  • Hi Yannick,

As usual you have given some great information here. I have had a free $100 coupon sitting next to my computer for google ad words but I’m not drawn toward using it for the same reason you mentioned. I’ve noticed everyone in my house ignores those ads so I figured most house holds do the same. Thanks for agreeing with me! :-) )))
